Maintenance

  • Hand-wash only
    • – When done using your cutting board, wash with a towel using cool water and your choice of sanitizer. We recommend toweling all sides of the board with each cleaning to prevent warping. Do not leave your cutting board submerged in water. Immediately dry off with a clean towel, this will prevent bacteria build up on your cutting board. If possible, dry on the long side to encourage even drying.
    • – Do not place in dishwasher or put bleach on board to clean
  • Store board in a dry place or keep on your counter
  • Cleaning board with corse salt & lemon
    • – 1st wipe board with a warm damp cloth then sprinkling a light layer of corse salt. After, cut a lemon in 1/2 and rub the flat side of the lemon on the board while lightly squeezing the lemon. Let sit for at least 5 minutes and then use a sponge to wipe excess. If the acidity causes your board to become dry use Custom Cuts’ Wood Conditioner or mineral oil.
  • Disinfecting a board
    • – Acetic acid (white vinegar) is an excellent disinfectant for E. coli, Salmonella and other household bacteria. Put some white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it on the board, wait at least 5 minutes then wipe off with a damp cloth.
  • Refurbishing a wood cutting board
    • – Having knife cuts in a cutting board is normal from daily usage but you are able to make your cutting board look like new. All you need is 3 grits of sand paper; 80, 180, 220. You will want to first sand with the 80 grit until the cuts or grooves are sanded out of the board. Then take the 180 grit and sand until the board is smooth to the touch. Once done you will want to take the 220 grit and sand minimum of 3 passes, then take a damp cloth and wipe off the board and let dry. Lastly you will want to go over with 220 grit again for at least two more times for the smoothest finish possible. Once finished, wipe the board once again with a damp towel and let dry. Finally, apply Custom Cuts’ wood conditioner to the board to achieve the same finish that comes fresh from our woodshop.

Wood Conditioner Options

  • Custom Cuts’s Wood Conditioner
    • – Our Wood Conditioner contains a mixture of natural untreated beeswax and food-grade mineral oil. The mineral oil component soaks in and penetrates deep into wood fibers to restore moisture, repel stain and orders, prevent cracking, and to bring out the natural sheen of the wood grain. Beeswax will help seal the wood and keep water, food particles, and harmful bacteria from penetrating the surface of your wood. Apply with a cloth or paper towel and leave for 30 minutes, then wipe off any excess.
  • Mineral Oil
    • – Mineral oil soaks in and penetrates deep into wood fibers to restore moisture, repel stains and odors, prevent cracking, and to bring out the natural sheen of the wood grain. Apply mineral oil using a clean cloth and spread evenly. Let the mineral oil sit for a few hours, or even over night. Afterward wipe off excess with a dry cloth.
  • DO NOT use vegetable or nut based oils on cutting boards
    • – Do not use vegetable or nut based oils on board because they will spoil and become rancid overtime. This will leave your board with an unpleasant smell and can change the taste of your food.
